Potty training has been energy consuming for all humans involved (this is a tad dramatic, but truly, potty training has been no joke). Having items available that are simple to use and the right fit for everyone eases the stress of the whole process. After doing lots (and lots) of research of what is on the market, here are my favorite items that are great quality and have made the experience “go” more smoothly.
Potties:
BabyBjörn Smart Potty. This is a floor potty that is the top of every list. It is amazing. It’s easy to move around, puts the kiddo in a great position for pooping and peeing, is easy to clean and has a high splash guard in the front to help keep the contents inside. This potty seems great for kiddos of all sizes and has a sleek, nonintimidating appearance.
BabyBjörn Toilet Trainer. This is a potty seat that goes onto a traditional toilet. It has a handle for easy application and removal and is adjustable to sit securely. There are also small hooks that can be purchased and placed on the toilet tank or another area in the bathroom to hang the seat when not in use. The only negative to this seat is that it is more difficult for smaller and shorter kiddos. It is difficult to find a stool tall enough (and small enough for some bathrooms) to put smaller kiddos in a good position where their feet can be flat on the stool. For us, this product will be great when Poppy grows a little taller.
Stools:
Stools come in handy for both use of potty seat toilet trainers and for hand washing once finished. Here are my two favorite stools!
Skip Hop Toddler Step Stool, Double Up. This one has two steps, can compress and is ultimately slightly taller for higher countertops.
Underwear:
The potty training plan that we chose as best for our household was one in which we went “cold turkey” on diapers and went straight to underwear. For more information, check out my post all about Our Potty Training Journey.
Fruit of the Loom. Poppy tried a few of the top rated underwear brands (that were reasonably priced) and our favorite without a doubt are the Fruit of the Loom. They are soft, thin (in a good way), easy to pull up and down and economic. Of note, these run small. Poppy is 25 lbs and we purchased both the Fruit of the Loom Toddler Girls’ Tag-Free Cotton Underwear size 2T/3T from Amazon and the Fruit of the Loom Girls’ 14pk Classic Briefs size 4 from Target. All of them fit well and the 4 is a bit better for training as they are looser for easier on/off and also for sensing wetness. (As a reference, she wears 18mo-2T clothing in most brands.)
We attempted daytime and nighttime training all at one time. After several weeks of nighttime attempts, we made the decision to hold off for another few months and try again. We are so proud of her and she did great, even able to complete successful “dream pees” a few hours into bedtime as well as a some mornings dry. Overall, she is such a fantastic and deep sleeper in the evening.***
Bedroom Items:
Prepping the house, especially the crib/bed is helpful in decreasing stress for the big people in the household. The laundry burden can be large and making sure everything is dry and ready when needed can feel daunting. My favor potty training product is washable waterproof pads, often called chux pads. They are so absorbable and are excellent at protecting the layers below them. Taking the recommendations of many potty training blogs, layering 2 layers of mattress protectors and fitted sheets is beneficial as the when layers are removed there is still a dry and protective layer. I have found that putting the a layer of 2 chux pads to cover the whole mattress on top. They are much easier to change and wash than a full fitted sheet and protect the under layers much better! Seriously, buy some chux pads. These waterproof pads are nice and soft and great for the bed. There are many other more medical-like options like this that are great too, especially for covering the couch or other areas that need to be kept safe.
Bathroom Items:
I each of our bathrooms I purchased small containers for each bathroom to hold the items. We placed several books and magazine, including a Ditty Bird book for extra motivation to continue to sit on the potty. A Pop Bubble Toy, wipes and a small container of M&Ms as potty rewards round out the items in the bins.
After lots of reading about flushable wipes, the consensus seems to be to avoid flushing any type of wipe, even those labeled as flushing for the health of the plumbing. We have tried Kandoo “flushashable” wipes (and just disposed of them) but we were unimpressed. They are very thin and hard to get out of the container. We continue to use Pampers Pure Wipes which have been great. For easy disposing and cleanliness, we moved the Mini Dekor Diaper Pail that was near our changing table to one bathroom and a trashcan with a lid to another.
Extras:
Puracy Laundry Stain Remover. Literally, hands down the best laundry product for all things children.
