Obviously staying in the house forever is not an option while potty training and the right products make it very feasible (and dare I say it, almost easy) to use the potty on the go.

Hands down my favorite product is the OXO’s Tot 2 in 1 Potty Travel Potty. This thing just just awesome. It’s small enough to be stored in a backpack and there is an option to place disposable bags into it when needed.

We spend a lot of time outside and with Poppy needing somewhere to sit a stand alone portable potty is necessary for us. Another product that is raved about though is a folding potty seat cover. I’ve never used it personally but have heard excellent things about the compactness and functionality.

Convert the diaper bag into a toddler bag. We got rid of all the diapers – it’s scary as hell but you can do it! Consider buying yourself a new bag too (a good excuse for a fun new item for mom and dad). My diaper backpack just felt so heavy and large so I downsized a bit and bought this bag, which I love. The large style of opening makes getting the potty in and out a breeze. I also love using packing cubes in the diaper bag. I keep all my extras (2 full outfits, a pair of shoes, 2 additional extra pairs of underwear, a wet bag, a burp cloth/towel and some m&ms) in a packing cube. This not only helps to keeps everything organized but makes it super convenient to pull out the bag for the stroller or other areas if I do not want to take the whole backpack. Keep the wipes and other daily incidentals that are needed in the bag. Be sure to add your reward item of choice as well as an extra shirt for yourself (this is a necessary item regardless of the stage of parenthood).

Waterproof diaper covers, aka “car pants” as they are called affectionately in our house, was another item that made me feel more confident and less anxious. As a person who likes control, cleanliness and no additional wasted energy, the thought of pee in the car seat was/is terrifying. At the beginning of our potty training journey, and still for longer distances, we place these covers over her cloths for an added layer of protection for the car seat. From what I researched and based on my comfort level, after market inserts to protect the seat are not recommended by most car seat manufacturers. I did cut a few disposable chux pads to the approximate width of the carseat and also cut a small slit just the size of the leg strap to slip it through. These pads are so absorbent but also very thin so I personally felt that the car seat function was unaffected. These extra barriers have given me some mental comfort (and luckily, knock on wood, they have not had to be put to the test yet).

Finally, patience and gentleness for yourself. This journey is full of ups and downs for the big people and the little people. You’re doing a good job – in case no one told you today!

What items have do you love for potty training? What has helped you when you’re in a pickle?

Let’s talk soon,
Al
