Motherhood is beautiful they say – and it certainly is – but it can be equally overwhelming and very shy of glamorous. With all the tasks that seem to pile up, keeping them straight can feel daunting – especially with the dreaded “mom brain”. When women told me about “mom brain”, easy forgetfulness or distraction, before I was a mom I didn’t believe them. Of course, they were right.
One of the things that was often stressful for not only myself but the household was meals and snacks. What was she eating today? A question that so often occurred and for some reason always seemed to be directed towards me, mom. My solution – an area in the fridge designated for just Poppy’s food and a white board with meal information as well as basic scheduling information. This was obviously very helpful for caretakers but also for myself and my husband as well. We often would forget what we ourselves planned so writing it down in an accessible area was a game changer. It seems so simple, but really has had a huge impact.
Here is an example of my board. (I’m a sucker for color coding and organization). This was made when she was about 17 months old. The schedule including number of naps and where the meals, bottles/milk and snacks fit into the day has obviously changed and been fluent as she has gotten older. Everyone’s schedule and therefore board or written agenda will look differently – as it should. When Poppy was younger (and this still hold true now) a consistent nap schedule with appropriate awake windows (time periods) for her age worked amazingly for us. It allowed her to be not over tired, sleep well and then awake rested and ready for activity. All children and households are different and finding your niche (and finding it again and again as they grow older and change) is so helpful to ease the day to day and create more energy to enjoy!
Do you have a way that you help organize your household?
